Southport zoo to close
Archive - November 2003
Southport
Zoo - the scene of a campaign by CAPS and other groups to close
it and re-home the animals - is due to close down over the next
few months.
The land is being taken over by the adjoining fun-fair and the
zoo is already moving out some of the animals and will be closed
by early next year. The two chimpanzees who CAPS were trying to
persuade the zoo to hand over to the care of the Monkey World rescue
centre are now to be moved to a different sanctuary in South Wales.
Unfortunately
Southport Zoo's owners are purchasing a former falconry centre near
Giggleswick in North Yorkshire and are due to open it as a zoo next
spring. CAPS will be keeping a close eye on developments.
We would like to thank everyone who has supported the campaign
to close Southport Zoo and to rescue the chimpanzees.
