Saturday 8th October saw the International Day of Action against the 'dolphin
drives' that take place in Japan. During these 'drives', wild
dolphins are rounded up and either slaughtered for their meat
or sold live to aquariums and other 'marine parks' around
the world. Aquarium staff are actually present during the
captures in order to chose the 'best' dolphins.
Every year, more than 20,000 dolphins are killed in these
'drives' in Japan.
CAPS took part in the protest outside the Japanese Embassy
in London, where around 300 people held a loud and visual
demonstration, making their opposition to this capture of
wild animals perfectly clear.
Banners in both English and Japanese expressed people's outrage,
and thousands of tourists saw the protest and were alerted
to the horrors. As the 'dolphin drives' are so secretive few
people in Japan know about them, but pictures of the protest,
with slogans in Japanese, will be distributed across Japan
to show the international outrage against these captures and
killings.
Demonstrations took place at 45 cities across the world,
with thousands of people coming together in unity to oppose
the capture, slaughter and captivity of dolphins. Protests
were held in the following countries:
France,
Spain,
Germany,
Brazil,
Australia,
Belgium,
Hungary,
Argentina,
Venezuela,
Croatia,
Holland,
Ireland,
China,
Turkey,
New Zealand,
Philippines,
Mexico,
Italy,
Slovenia,
Solomon Islands,
Canada,
Austria,
Kenya,
Mozambique,
Bahamas and around a dozen cities in the USA.
