Ask Skegness Council to turn down 'jumbo gift'
Archive - February 2004

UPDATE: Skegness Town Council has turned down an offer of an elephant as a 'gift' to the town following our campaign.

A man who moved to Skegness in Lincolnshire from India in 1996 has offered to buy an elephant as a gift to the town. Please help us encourage the Council to refuse the offer.

Dr Rao Kodali said that he has made the offer as "a gesture of my appreciation to the people of Skegness." The Council is to discuss the offer at a meeting on 10 March.

Although it appears that the Council will decline the offer they have asked that people contact them with their views. All views will be logged and provided to Councillors at the meeting. CAPS has agreed to provide a report for the meeting listing the reasons why the offer should be rejected. This is a good opportunity for the whole concept of keeping elephants and other wild animals in captivity to be addressed and questioned.

Many residents of Skegness have already contacted the Council and the press to object to the town having an elephant. Please email a polite letter to the Town Clerk at Skegness Town Council asking the Council to reject the gift of an elephant. See the points to make in the box, right.

CAPS has asked Dr Kodali to withdraw his offer of an elephant and to instead either use the money towards protecting elephants in their natural habitat or to fund wildlife gardens and tree planting at Skegness schools.
