CAPS would like to see Fred released to a sanctuary.

UPDATE: We are delighted to report that Fred has finally been re-homed to a bear sanctuary (December 2003). CAPS have again called upon the government to ban the use of all animals in circuses.

Fred the Canadian Black Bear is owned by Jeffrey Hoffman and tours with Circus King.

Fred is the only performing bear in a British circus. CAPS has became increasingly concerned for the welfare of Fred. He appears to be suffering physically and mentally. He has put on weight, seems lethargic and displays stereotyped behaviours - mindless repetitive actions such as constantly chewing the bars of his cage.

Bears are neophilic; they love 'the new' and constantly explore their surroundings. In the wild, bears would forage, hunt for food, climb trees and may live for up to 25 years. Fred lives in a sterile environment, with little stimulation. Consequently, he suffers from stress and frustration.

CAPS wishes to see Fred released to a sanctuary in Canada, already home to other ex-circus bears, including one from the UK. CAPS has secured a place for Fred at the sanctuary. Fred cannot go back to the wild as he is now institutionalised, but the sanctuary is perfect for him.

CAPS told the Express newspaper about Fred and his plight captured the hearts of the British public. The story ran for days and we were even featured on GMTV. Footage of Fred with his owners was shown and that day, after having seen Fred in action, we were inundated with calls from concerned viewers. Unfortunately, as Fred is the property of Jeffrey Hoffman, he cannot be forced to hand him over.
